5Exceeded my expectations!
By E. Sjoberg
I did some research, and knew the features I wanted in my car. This radio had nearly everything at a killer price - but the lack of reviews on Amazon (and simplesoftusa's website) concerned me. I rarely review, but here goes.SIMPLESOFT RESPONSIVENESS:I contacted the 'manufacturer' prior to purchase to elaborate on a few details(a California company, simplesoftusa.com, but the radio is made in China), and found them to be very helpful and responsive. It aided my decision to buy. I did buy from Amazon, however, for the 2-day delivery, and the peace of mind knowing I could return.INSTALL:The install is a reasonably big job for an amateur for myself, given the nature of the (horrible) instructions that are included. However, the included wiring harnesses are somewhat idiot-proof (I'll call them idiot-reductive), and with a little trial and error, I managed to get my features all working. I'll add that I found youtube very helpful in figuring out how to take apart the dash without damaging it on a 2008-current Toyota Highlander.I did install a backup camera, as well. This was a likewise reasonably big job. Each job (radio and camera) took approximately 4 hours, I'll say. I did both jobs alone; a helper would be useful.I had issues getting (of all things) the microphone for the bluetooth to work. I couldn't decide how or where it plugs into. In the end, I was able to get it to function by plugging it into the auxiliary port of the included harness. This means, however, that you will lose the auxiliary port (unless you feel like swapping it out, as needed). Losing this Aux Port is a double-whammy, I might add, since my stock aux port no longer works, either - the biggest disappointment I'd list on the project. I left my aux port, therefore, inside the dash rather than running it to the glove compartment, as i did the ipod and usb ports, so they can be accessed.I also couldn't determine from the instructions which way the GPS antenna should face. In the end, I ran it to the front center of my dashboard (by the windshield defrost) and opted to face it up, sticking it to the dash rather than the windshield. Reception has been excellent.THE LOOK:The unit would pass easily as OEM at a glance. The unit fits perfectly, and the lights glow the same green as the rest of the dash. If you look closely (something only the installer will notice), you'll notice that the color/texture isn't a perfect match with the surrounding pieces. but it is close enough, and I'm a tough critic.OPERATION:One of my key concerns with any unit was a good GPS unit. This unit uses Navteq, the mapping service provided Garmin uses. I was pleasantly surprised how efficient the navigation is. It offers a few things my Garmin doesn't, too. It has a compass, and can direct the map either north, or to your current direction, and it tells you where you currently are (road and city). It speaks and offers street names, but - as with Garmin, that can be funny (for example, it pronounces Route 2 as "Arr Tee Too." The Navigation voice comes over the radio - instead of muting the radio - which was interesting, but not really an issue. The GPS is a bit louder, and volume for both are controlled by the volume button, simultaneously. It works, and I could hear it just fine. Points of interest are hit-or-miss, but addresses work great.Radio reception is very good. The radio 'tunes' to half-variables (90.85, 90.90, 90.95, 91.00...). The only oddity I've found so far is that a popular local station, 107.9, actually comes in on 107.85. But, that could as likely be the station as our radio. Others all seem normal, and that may well be why it offers the half-variables.The bluetooth syncs automatically, and mutes everything else when in use. Volume is controlled by the same knob as radio. I have not yet tested it to see if it can sync to multiple phones, or synced my address book.Audio quality in all aspects is excellent with the stock Toyota base speakers.I love that the backup camera comes on automatically when in reverse, and returns to gps/radio afterwards. Many aftermarkets don't offer that (of what I read) - so you have to select it when you want it, and change it back when you're done. The system is touchscreen, and generally pretty intuitive. GPS search can take a few more clicks than I'd like to get to the search screen, but I shouldn't do that while driving, anyhow. I'll have to test the DVD. :-PIt also has a lot of other features available (DVD, satellite radio, tire pressure monitoring come to mind) which I don't anticipate using, but are pretty impressive! In all, I'd give 4.5 stars, with a half star lost for poor instructions and the loss of my included aux port. Since halves aren't an option, I'll round to the full 5-stars.
