5Best Navigation Unit Ever!
By Steve
Alright, where to start; this unit is AWESOME! I am also a proud owner of the original navigation headunit by JVC, the KW-NT1, which is still running strong after 4+ years. As i expected, this unit has loads of improvements over the older models, and all of the features are very robust and user-friendly.MY SETUP

S:- Installed on a 2008 Honda Accord 4dr EX-L V6 Auto, with Premium Audio and 6-CD changer (now removed). I purchased a Scosche HA1707DCDGB Custom Honda double-din Dash Plate to fit my car.- I purchased Metra 70-1730 Wiring Harness for Factory-Amplified 2008+ Honda (only for cars with premium audio). I also bought Metra 70-1729 Wiring Harness Non-Amplified version, just in case, and it turned out to be a good thing; i stole two pins from this to add Steering Wheel Controls to the Amplified harness.- I got the Metra 40-HD10 2005+ Honda Antenna Adapter, which works great, and i have no issues with weak antenna signal.- For the responsible and intuitively safe drivers among us, i also got the MicroBypass Parking Brake Override (if you want to use video features while driving); on the old KW-NT1 model, i just connected the parking brake signal wire to ground, and that worked fine; probably would have worked fine here as well.- I used Metra Axxess ASWC Steering Wheel Control Interface (if you have steering wheel controls), and this worked flawlessly once i added the two pins to the wiring harness. Search DriveAccord.net for pin numbers and details on Honda vehicles.- I would recommend buying CablesToGo 03181 RCA Audio Splitter/Combiner (1x Mono RCA to 2x Stereo RCA Adapter), this headunit has a Left and Right subwoofer RCA connector on it, but the Metra harness only has one RCA connector; buying this splitter should balance out the bass.- If you want a backup camera, i got the Boyo VTL275 Chrome License Plate Backup Camera (optional).- I did not get the iPod/iPhone Video USB cable (by JVC), cuz you can still connect your iPhone, you just can't play videos from it.- I did not get the SiriusXM Satellite Tuner (by JVC), cuz this unit has HD radio, which is good enough for me. I can also use the IHeartRadio app on my iPhone to play any radio station i want over 3G.- This unit adds a Speed Signal wire, which is supposed to be spliced into the speedometer wire of your car; however, i chose not to connect this (don't like the idea of messing with my speedometer), and it works fine. They add this feature for two reasons: 1.) to more accurately determine the speed of your car, and alert you if you go over the posted speed limit (the maps retain speed limit details for major highways, but this feature can be turned off), or to allow your unit to maintain your vehicle's position as you drive thru tunnels (and lose satellite response/positioning), and 2.) to prevent you from watching video over 3MPH (their way of legalling insulating themselves from people getting in wrecks from watching DVDs while driving). By choosing not to connect this, and by grounding out the parking brake wire, i can still play videos on this unit while driving; however, the GPS can still estimate your speed and pops up a one-time message on the video screen saying something like "speed signal not detected, using GPS to determine speed instead". click OK and you can keep watching video. I have also heard that you can use a 3ohm resistor and connect the VSS wire, and the resistor slows the pulses down enuf to always stay below 3MPH; however, i wasn't able to verify if this is true.COMMENTS ON NEW FEATURES:- I love the new buttons on the front. The button actually depresses, giving you feedback that feels solid; my old KW-NT1 was just touch sensitive. Press MAP or AV to switch between the two functions of the unit; press MENU to view all settings for all features, both Map and AV; press the knob for SOURCE, where you can select which A/V source you want to play.- The Map screen has an A/V source button in the bottom right corner which brings up a simplified menu imposed over the map allowing you to fast forward or rewind songs (if your AV source is USB or SD), or scans forward/backward thru radio stations (if your AV source is Radio). If you are playing video or a DVD, this menu will let you play, pause, etc, as well as impose a small video window overlayed on the map. You can show or hide this simplified menu by pressing the bottom right button.- When driving along a route, the Lane Guidance window will pop up on the screen illustrating a 3D view of the upcoming turn (only on freeways), making it really easy to identify which exit to take.- The faceplate is not detachable on this unit, a feature which i actually prefer; the KW-NT1 has occasional problems rebooting if you press too hard on the screen, as it jolts the pins on the backside of the faceplate.- The volume knob has a very light positional click when rotated (not a smooth rotation), a feature which i also prefer. i like feeling how much volume i am applying rather than trial and error.- The USB cable is hardwired into the back of the unit, and extends about 3 feet. it is a 1-Amp USB port, rather than just a standard 500mA, so this allows for a non-powered USB hub to be connected to it if you want to charge your iPhone and play music from a USB flash drive.- If you succesfully wired the backup camera, when you put the car in reverse, the unit automatically changes the source to the backup camera, and mutes the volume of whatever AV source is playing. it takes about 1.5 seconds to change the source, power the camera and view the video on the screen, but this isn't very long unless you're a speedy driver.- The Lifetime Traffic service works great. It isn't actually a subscription service (no need to sign up, activate, register, or anything), its nothing more than a secondary HD radio tuner on this unit that exclusively searches for HD broadcasts that relay digital traffic and news services in your local area. I live in a city with about 250,000 people and there is an HD Traffic broadcast somewhere here, so it's fairly widespread. In Orlando Florida, this service came in particularly useful on vacation. If your settings are configured right, the map will show a blinking green line that appears on major roads and highways. This blinking line will turn red if there is a traffic build-up, and is fairly accurate in the placement of where it starts and ends. There is usually a yellow icon that appears on the screen placed near where the traffic alert was reported; when you click the icon, it pulls up a description of the alert and provides options for diverting around it. The reporting of traffic incidents seems to be delayed by anywhere from 15 mins to 1 hour, but this is likely a delay in when the incident is reported, not a delay in this unit receiving the information.- The Female navigation voice is different than the older model, but equally as pleasant and easy to understand. She has pre-recorded segments for common phrases such as "In 1.5 miles, turn left on ____", then she uses a text-to-speech function to read the street name. I also have a portable Garmin GPS, and that female voice speaks very forcefully and demanding; the JVC voice is far superior in pleasantness, annunciation, and clarity (i may be splitting hairs here, but these small features matter to me).- PROCESSING SPEED: this unit is extremely fast. it has a 533MHz processor, which is equivalent to your average smartphone. It calculates a 500-mile route with two stops in less than 5 seconds. My older JVC unit took about 5-10 seconds, and the Garmin GPS takes 10-20 seconds. Seraching for POIs (Points Of Interest) is even faster: this one pulls up about 100 listings within a couple seconds, and scrolls quickly; my older unit took maybe 50% longer, but still scrolled quickly; and the Garmins GPS takes 10-30 seconds and scrolls very slowly.IMPORTANT WARNING:I never like to update firmware on any of my electronics, however, this is an absolute necessity if you want to use a MicroSD card with this unit. After a few days of leaving an SD card in the unit, and leaving the AV Source set to SD, i started up the car one day and received a "Start Up Error." message on the screen. The unit was completely dead, and would not come on no matter how many times i restarted the car. One reviewer posted this comment online, but there is no information anywhere on the web describing how to fix a startup error. I called JVC Tech Support (which is nothing more than an outsourced call-answering service, their 'technicians' just do a search on their systems and tell you what it says to do), and they said this is a firmware issue requiring that you unplug the unit completely (to remove all power) and let it shut down completely. Rather than taking my dash apart again, i just removed the battery leads off the battery and let the car sit for 30 seconds. Upon reconnecting power, i started the car up and the system booted up fine (TAKE THE SD CARD OUT BEFORE STARTING UP). The unit displayed a brief message that there was no SD card, so i changed the AV Source to Radio, then inserted the MicroSD card containing the correct firmware update on it. It popped up with a message saying that an update was detected, would i like to Update? i selected yes and had to let it run for about 15 mins. After it was done, it rebooted itself, and it came back up with all my settings just as they were before.EDIT/UPDATE: Dec 2012Some reviewers noted that the maps have issues. This unit uses NavTeq Maps, as did my old unit, so any map errors are a result of faulty NavTeq data. You can actually browse NavTeq maps on their website, if you want to ensure that they have acurately depicted your area. It also appears that they have a Map Reporting feature on their website, for helping them to improve their database, although i have no idea whether this is as good as it sounds.NAVIGATION ANOMOLIES: I used the navigation while driving all over Houston TX recently, and encountered a few small issues trying to get thru very complex interchanges. For example, I had to change from one major highway to another, and I needed to get onto an East-bound ramp; so the directions said "in 0.3 miles, take the exit on the right." However, the West-bound ramp was also on the right, and was only 0.1 miles before the eastbound ramp; so, i nearly turned onto the first exit on the right, when it would have been helpful to know that i needed the second exit on the right. I would probably be hard pressed to find a bigger and more complex interchange than that one (somewhere near I-610 and I-45), but it did reveal some minor flaws when navigating complicated road systems.Still an avid fan of this unit, however; I don't ever plan on buying a different brand.

1GPS not ready for prime time in Minneapolis/St.Paul aread
By Mather R Glaeser
I'm not going to speak to anything but the quality of the GPS as that was the primary purpose we bought this unit for. The quality of the instruction, visuals, and execution is very good. You will understand what it is telling you what to do. The issue I have with this deck is that it is missing a large percentage of cities in its database in the Minneapolis/St.Paul metro area. The addresses are in the GPS you just can't find them. For instance Apple Valley address (est.1969 pop. of 50,000 people) show up under St.Paul. Another example is Maple Grove (est.1954 pop.62,000) addresses show up under Osseo. Other cities I have found missing Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center, Bloomington, and Plymouth. I of course haven't checked every city in the area but I can assure you all of these cities are big enough to show up in a GPS with 10s of thousands of residence each.So in my opinion a $700-$900 Navigation unit should make you guess what city that is close to your destination has the address you are looking for. The other issue is the GPS only lets you set navigation by:1.) Browsing the map (kind of useless if you don't know where you are going)2.) Entering an address starting with the City (again not good if you city is missing)3.) Using Lat. Long. (I'm not going to always have the internet available to convert and address to coordinates)In all honesty I have seen some addresses show up in other GPS units in the wrong city, but1.) at least the city I was looking for was in the database and2.) I always had the option to search via ZIP code.If this unit let you search by ZIP code it would work fine, as it is the navigation is basically useless so I have wasted $1000 ($700 for the navigation $300 for the install and parts). So I would avoid this unit until they can either add a ZIP code search or figure out that they are missing a large percentages of cities in their Database. I will revise this if customer service comes through with a solution but so far all they have said is for me to update to the latest firmware. I did and it didn't solve anything.

5Feature rich and iPhone 5 Compatible!!
By Peter Price
After buying an iPhone 5 I decided that I wanted to upgrade my car stereo/GPS experience, by finding a head unit that would handle GPS Navigation, as well as connection to my iPhone 5. After doing a painful amount of research, it was apparent that since the iPhone 5 had changed it's connection to the new Lightning connector, it caused all manner of incompatibilities with various in dash GPS and car stereo systems. But I'm happy to report that this unit works flawlessly with the iPhone 5 running iOS 6 both through it's USB connection, and through Bluetooth Wireless as well!I was able to connect the new Lightning to USB cable from right into the supplied USB port and all iPod functionality worked. I was able to sift through playlists, and completely control the iPhone 5, no problem. I was also able to use Pandora through USB as well, without any issues. With Bluetooth, same thing. Although I could not search through playlists, I was able to get a display of the current song playing and be able to advance to next track or go back, as well as pause. Same went with Pandora via Bluetooth. Also the handsfree Bluetooth is great! Everyone I've talked to says they can hear me well, and it's awesome hearing the person on the other line via stereo!GPS has been solid. Sirius XM has worked well too.Overall I have no complaints and really happy I found this unit.If you want a solid In Dash Navigation receiver, with tons of functionality and solid compatibility with iPhone 5 and iOS 6. This is the one to get!
