OK. Past review of my Kenwood DDX8120 shows that I was MISERABLE with that hunkajunk that took a dirt nap after less than three years. Swore off Kenwood for life. Replaced the burned out technotrash 8120 with an Alpine INA-W910 and the heartache began anew. Horrible Alpine navi. Nanny warnings before every attempt to change something while driving. Push emergency brake, engage brake, release emergency brake, release brake. Sheer Alpine torture. Then, after skipping a couple generations of Kenwood navis, I finally relented and looked into the 9990HD. Glad I did.GUI is exponentially faster. Iconography is intuitive and slick. The Garmin is...well, a Garmin. So, here's a breakdown of the pros and cons as I see them after having played with this unit a bit.Pros:Not a Bose POSScreamingly fast GUIA2DP blu-tooth streaming so I can hardwire my iTouch for optimal sound for my audio library and use blu-tooth to stream my beloved WEEI sports radio meatheads from BostonVirtually INSTANT!!! rear camera usability - this unit does not need to fully boot before the rear cam comes on - AWESOME!!!Split screen navi so you can switch/control your audio sources while still seeing the map on your GUI...AND use your backup camera while driving to catch a glimpse of the punks riding your rear bumperTons of options for customizing your sound (I've got Diamond Audio S600s components in front driven by a JL Audio 300/4 bridged to 150 rms per speaker and a JL Audio 10W6V2 sub driven by a JL Audio 250/1 dedicated amp so this system ROCKS!)Super categorization of songs for quick recallNo adverts for the free lifetime trafficCons:GPS screen has a very annoying menu at the bottom that I haven't been able to hide that takes up valuable real estate on the GUINo ability yet found to alter the color/tone of the map layout (very drab, boring gray color as opposed to my previous Kenwood that used a fleshtone color)Still a comparatively slow boot-up time (Alpine booted several seconds faster)No 3-d buildings (while the city I live in renders this virtually moot, the list price for this unit belies the decision to remove this from its offerings)Very limited voice recognition on this model (none for navi or music...just for the phone)Conclusion:Kenwood removed some functionality from this unit that past lifecycles included. Gone are 3-d building and comprehensive voice commands. Gone are some gimmicks like checking stocks and seeing weather maps on-screen (yes the DDX-8120 did both). But what Kenwood did do is soothe the soul of the mature audiophile who still has the hankering to rock the sedan once in awhile. The GUI is much more refined and responsive. Instead of flames breathing exhaust fumes on its GUI, this unit is stable with a layout that conveys elegance. I won't hesitate to say this is likely the best overall HU out there. While it may not have the fanboy features that appeal to those still living with their parents or whose stereos exceed their annual net, it is a rock solid unit.Kudos, Kenwood. You won me back.++++++++++++++++++++++UPDATED REVIEW+++++++++++++++++++++++++++Well, it seems I spoke too soon. Shortly after this review, I went back to the authorized dealer that installed it, had an amp installed, and went to pick my car up. Turned the key, the Kenwood splash screen opened up, then nothing. Bricked. The HU kept cycling and cycling and cycling. Installer pulled the HU after testing the fuse box and tried resetting the HU. He then gave up and called Kenwood. Customer Service at Kenwood said it sounded like a firmware issue and to send it back. I returned it and ordered another identical unit thinking maybe I just got a lemon. Over on a Kenwood forum, someone else reported the exact same issue. My fingers are crossed. After the disaster of my first Kenwood, the DDX812, I sheepishly went back to Kenwood after my Alpine 910 turned out to be junk. I hope I've had my last issue with Kenwood. If this one buys the farm, not sure who to trust anymore.

I've had this unit for about a week now in my 2012 Dodge Challenger and I must say I am very impressed. Pioneer has got nothing on Kenwood! I have heard of the previous generation models being sluggishly slow but this is not the case at all with these new units. The processor has been upgraded and it shows! When I first bought the unit it came with firmware 1.2, it was fast but after I upgraded to 1.5 the functions are almost instantaneous. The GPS is very good considering its basically a Garmin unit built right in. It has all the same features and quality you would come to expect from a Garmin. I added an addition backup camera and it looks great on screen. The resolution of the screen is amazing and videos from IPOD and DVD look great. It plays pretty much every format of video Ive tried so far (.avi,.mp4,.mkv etc). Pandora works flawlessly and it is very nice to be able to control it completely from the head unit instead of fumbling with it on your phone( with the Kenwood iPod cable). There is also a usb dongle that you can use for play media from usb storage. Now for the sound, the ability to tweak the sound to your liking is incredible. There is a 13 band EQ with not only zone control but a highway setting that is meant to drown out "road noise". HD radio sounds great as well as Ipod and cds. The only thing I'm a little disappointed with is the Sirius XM sound quality but that seems to be an issue with Sirius since they merged with XM. All in all I am extremely happy I chose this unit!

After doing tons and tons of research I finally settled on the Kenwood DNX9990HD and am glad I did. I had contemplated purchasing the previous year's model but did not due to complaints of Operating System lag. This unit has zero lag and boots up quickly. The sound quality is amazing on this thing and it has so many tuning options that you can pretty much do away with any external processor. The Garmin GPS feature is all you would expect from Garmin and not a sub-par knockoff program used by other companies that will not be mentioned. I haven't used the AHA radio feature so I cannot speak to that but the Pandora is nice. It has built in HD radio which dramatically enhances the local radio stations. All in all a great unit that I highly recommend to anyone looking for the best in vehicle entertainment. I don't like that you need an extra cable to connect your iPod. This cable connects to the aux in on the back and to the usb dongle attached. I think that it uses standard stereo out and the usb only for power/charging. It would be nice if i could use the DAC's in the Kenwood to produce the sound as opposed to the one built in to the iPod. I think it would sound much nicer. Since I mostly use the Bluetooth audio this is a minor gripe.The Good:Tons of sound enhancement features including space enhancers, a 16 band graphic eq, staging options, and detailed crossover control just to startGreat GPS function from GarminBluetooth audio sounds amazing.
