3G.P.S. for RVs - Feature-Packed but not Problem-Free
By Phyllis Staff
When our new Magellan G.P.S. arrived, I charged it for four hours. Then we took it out for an hour's spin in the country to put it through its paces. We were both impressed and disappointed. Here's our experience with the Magellan RoadMate Pro 9165T:PROS:1. Quick connection to the satellite, so the device knew exactly where we were traveling (as long as it was working).2. Large, super-easy-to-read screen. With a quick glance it's easy to see Speed Limits, location, ETA, and more.3. Over Speed Limit Warning - if you exceed the speed limit, the device will issue an audible warning.4. Feature-packed device - Find a camping site or RV park near to your present location; see points of interest by type of interest (for example, food, medical care); find a gas station quickly. The presentation is quite impressive.5. Nice large virtual keyboard makes entering addresses easy and accurate.CONS:1. Unit froze after thirty minutes - twice! We were able to restart it by turning the device off and allowing it to rest before restarting it successfully.2. Unit has trouble recalculating if you leave the appointed itinerary. We drove onto country roads away from the freeway in order to see what would happen; the unit did not reconfigure itself quickly and seemed to have difficulty arranging a route back to the freeway.OVERALL:This is a great-looking device with a big screen and lots of features, but I would not be comfortable relying on it far from home.

5Perfect for RV'ers!
By Carolyn Lee
The best way to test a GPS is on the road, so when I received the Magellan RoadMate RV9165T-LM 7-inch GPS I charged it all night long then took it out on the road. I have been wanting to try a restaurant I had seen on the Food Network called "Chicken Mary's". All I knew was that it was somewhere in Kansas, so after hooking up the GPS (which for me was very easy to do, I attached the "holder" by its suction cup to my windshield and then seated the GPS into the holder - the suction cup never came unattached from the window unlike my other GPS which would fall off quite often) I turned on the RoadMate and searched for a business. I just typed in Chicken Mary's and after searching it found the address and my trip was started! The trip was 208 miles round trip to Chicken Mary's and back. The Amazon listing already lists a lot of the features this Roadmate has so I want to list the things I was most impressed with which were: the 7 inch size which is very easy to see when you need to look at it quickly while driving; the female voice was not annoying at all like some I have heard; and the RoadMate showed me which lane I needed to be in for each turn as well as for each highway interchange that come up. The lane information while driving an RV, as you can imagine, is priceless. It is near impossible to change lanes at the last minute in a big vehicle. I found that she would tell me of a lane change at 2miles before, 1 mile, .4 miles, and right when I needed to turn. Plenty of time to get the direction right. I also loved that when I decided to pull off the RoadMate recalculated with out saying "recalculating" several times. My old GPS would drive me crazy whenever I went against its directions. This Magellan RoadMate it a refreshing change!Other great features - there is a button on the directions page that you can touch to show nearby gas stations. Also, being able to input your RV's dimensions for help avoiding low bridges and small roads was great!I read the other reviews and some things that would help avoid some of their issues are:1. Charge the unit overnight to make sure it is completely charged. My unit never turned off during use. Also keep it plugged in when driving and you should never have a power problem. I have now used the GPS for 2 trips with no problems.2. I failed to update the GPS before I used it the first time so the time clock on my GPS was wrong. There is no way to change the time on the unit itself without hooking it to the computer first, so make sure you do that before its first use.For those of you thinking of getting an RV in the future, but don't have one quite yet, I used this GPS in my Ford Focus for a short trip. The 7-inch screen was pretty big for my small car, but not too big that I couldn't use it. I made sure to attach it with the suction cup to the middle part of my windshield and adjusted the holding arm to make the screen pull down out of my driving view so that it would not be an obstruction to my view. I was careful to make sure the unit was not in the way of any airbags - I can't imagine it would feel too good to have the GPS shoot out at me or the front passenger if an airbag went off. So you can use this unit in any size car. You also do not have to input the size of your vehicle to use this GPS, it is an optional feature for large RV's.I hope I have given you some additional information to help with your decision. This is not a cheap unit, so I know an informed decision is super important. I personally love the Magellan RoadMate and will be using it a lot in the near future. My next trip is to Orlando, Florida and I can't wait to use it again!

4A solid performer despite the usual gps interface quirkiness.
By Raquel S.
I used the Magellan Roadmate RV9165T-LM quite often over the summer for both long and short distances, in a commercial truck and in a normal passenger vehicle. While Magellan's menu is a bit quirky to use, the GPS unit is a solid performer overall. This past June 2012, I had the opportunity to accompany my husband cross country from Florida to California in his semi tractor-trailer vehicle. It was the near perfect opportunity to test the Magellan Roadmate. While I wasn't driving an RV, the same benefits apply - making sure I use roadways and bridges with appropriate clearances for large/heavy vehicles such as RVs and tractor trailers. This unit allows the user to program the stats of the large vehicle you're driving: height, width, weight, and length. When this information is active, the GPS will work very similarly to a trucker-type GPS in that it will avoid bridges and roads that don't have the height clearance or specs for large or heavy vehicles to pass safely. With the maps up to date, I did not find any discrepancies in the directions it gave us. (Unlike my husband's trucker GPS that attempted to guide him down a road where there was clearly posted no commercial trailer trucks allowed while the Magellan did not. Interesting.)The only discrepancy was the U-turns option found in the navigation portion of the menu. The unit by default allows u-turns, but when your driving an unwieldy vehicle like a tractor-trailer or a long RV, you'll find doing U-turns are not feasible. You'll want to deactivate this if have a large RV that does not allow for easy U-turns.The quirkiness of the Magellan comes in the menu interface. I've yet to find a GPS with the ideal easy-to-navigate and intuitive menu system, the Magellan included. With Magellan, though, it's not so bad once you become familiar with it. BUT...here's my pet peeve with Magellan's interface...why, oh why isn't there a quick exit back to main map? You click, click, click each icon to get where to need, then you have to click back, back, back, back, back to get back to the map. Come on, really? What? It's too hard to put in an "exit back to map" button icon? Sheesh. Also, the touch screen works faster and better with rounded back of my finger nail than using the padded touch of my fingertip. (I avoided using my fingernail edge out of concern of possibly damaging the touchscreen.)Despite the quirky menu navigation, there's a lot of good stuff the Magellan program offers that has pleased me greatly. I can program addresses directly on the Magellan or via my computer then sync to keep both devices updated. I can also have the option of saving some of your addresses to a one-touch menu for faster access. Also, if I'm on the road and looking for a particular venue such as a nearby restaurant, shopping store, park, etc, you can do a search by name or type and it will find it for you. I have had to use this several times while my truck trip to California and back, and and again during a trip to Legoland, and it worked great as long as you have the proper spelling. This feature pleased me a lot.Another feature I truly like in the Magellan Roadmate program was the ability to switch which view you prefer and optional features such as mileage, time left, speed, or altitude. When traveling cross country, the altitude was particularly fascinating to me. Our travels from Florida to California went from 30 ft to over five and six thousand feet above sea level. Wow. However, at home, I switch to the time countdown feature that is especially handy when getting my kid to school or giving people my estimate time of arrival.Lastly, the speed limits/speed warning features are another plus. The Magellan GPS, to date, has accurately shown the correct posted speed limits for the roads I've traveled that were not under construction. The GPS will also warn me when I'm going too fast for the posted speed limit. I like this, as I don't always catch when the speed limit for stretch of road has changed. The Magellan Roadmate RV9165T-LM is just as handy as a passenger vehicle GPS, though it's quite big with its 7 inch screen and more tricky to mount with the included bulky mounting arm. When I mounted the GPS in my husband's truck, it stuck the first time and stayed for two weeks straight without a single problem throughout the bouncy ride for thousands of miles. And yet, I mount it on the window of my SUV, it falls off after a few hours. I finally fastened it to door of my glove compartment box. It has held fast since for several weeks with no problems. This works better for me, since it doesn't impede my view of the windshield and it's doesn't look so ridiculous. Switching from RV/large vehicle use to passenger vehicle use is a simple to do in the settings menu. Once it's set for passenger vehicle, the vehicle icon used in the menus switch from an RV to a passenger vehicle, so you know which mode you are using.Performance wise, the Magellan Roadmate has been largely trouble free. Occasionally I find I had to reboot it because it locked up, but this is so typical of nearly every smartpad or anything electronic that is using a computer chip nowadays. Power cycling the Roadmate fixes it every time. The battery life lasts at least 30 minutes when not plugged in, sometimes longer. When not in use, I store my Magellan Roadmate GPS unit in an attractive protective sleeve Timbuk2 Kindle Fire Ballistic Envelope Sleeve with 360 degree protection, Black I originally purchased for my Kindle Fire and it fits perfectly.(Dimensions are nearly identical.)To wrap it up, here's my breakdown regarding the Magellan Roadmate RV9165T-LM for Rvs.The good stuff:- Reliable performer. Quickly picks up GPS signals when outdoors.- Free lifetime map updates.- Good for both RV and passenger vehicle. Easily switches from either mode.- The Roadmate program works well and give highly accurate directions that are easy to follow.- Extra features to the Roadmate work are a plus: Speed limit, traffic warning, One Touch directions, altitude, etc.- 7 inch screen is a great size for larger vehicles and easier to see and use.- Sound/voice directions are clear and understandable.- Mounting arm works great, when mounted firmly, and stands up to a lot of bumps and vibrations.So-so stuff to consider:- The mounting arm is a bit bulky to use with a passenger vehicle.- The touch screen requires a harder touch like the back of a finger nail to get a fast response.- Menu navigation needs is a lot of pressing and is quirky to find what you're looking for, then you got to press back, back, back, back to exit out.- 7 inch screen is great for RV but may be too big for passenger car, especially with the bulky arm mount.- Occasionally hangs. (Reboot clears this out.)I'm pleased with my Magellan Roadmate despite its quirks. I like I can go from passenger car to a large vehicle like an RV and have reliable directions to work with. The more I use it, the more fond of it I become.
