5Make no mistake - Best non-navi deck out there.
    By VincentVanBro
After waiting for the ACH-8400 to finally release for about 4 months, I picked mine up from an amazon seller for 150 bucks less than other retailers were selling them for. Received the head unit about a week ago, installed it, and used it without a parking brake bypass for about 4 days. I found it a little upsetting the things you couldn't do without engaging the parking brake (twice), but once I received and installed the bypass the head units functionality opened up ten fold. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND INSTALLING A PARKING BRAKE BYPASS. While I don't encourage watching video or any other activity that could possibly impare your driving, I believe that some core functions should be able to be used without the parking brake engaged.Screen Quality/Build: The 7''/16:9 800x400 VGA display looks crystal clear and some of the best I've ever seen on a in dash screen. Videos look nice and sharp. The anti-glare/smudge screen work well, but just like any of head unit direct sunlight will make it harder to view. However, the screen stays mostly free of smudges and fingerprints despite how much you will be touching the screen.User Interface: The AVH-8400's UI is pretty sharp and snazzy. Almost everything you see can be customized and changed to your preference. Button color, text color, and even the background image can be changed. The UI responds fairly quickly when you are switching between functions, but can sometimes be a little wonky. The Pandora app needs to be launched through the phone before being used through the deck making you have to get your phone out to do so, but it's not that big of a deal. The bluetooth audio connects and disconnects very quickly, as well as has GREAT sound quality. The BT mic works very well - people tell me they can hear me perfectly even on highway roads (I drive a WRX STi, so it can get a little loud sometimes.). I have a strange issue when I plug in my phone that the bluetooth audio will sometimes take priority over the phone's audio, causing me to have to replug the cable to the phone. I simply just turned off the bluetooth audio option and I haven't had the problem since. The main audio screens are cleverly designed so that BT calling, track finding, EQ adjustments, and other things are available as a side screen rather than navigating away to use another function.AppRadio: I haven't purchased any apps other than the free ones recommended, but even with the included apps I find it very useable. The calendar/date function is nice if you use your phones calendar a lot (i.e. MSExchange). The google maps function is also great for simple navigation and beats the HELL out of looking down at your phone all the time while driving. MixTrax is fun to play with, but I don't really see myself using it much in the future. All in all, the AppRadio function has great potential and will have more apps available as it goes on.Overall, the head unit work great and has a ton of features to boot. I would recommend the 8400 to anyone looking for it's features and to those on the fence between the 4400 and the 8400. The screen resolution in it self is well worth the extra investment and after all, It is what you are looking at 100% of the time. The unit has very minor hiccups, but none worth chopping a whole star off for. If I could give it a 4.7, I would, but I feel like it's worthy of the round up to 5.P.S. - This is the working parking brake bypass I used with the unit. Parking Brake Override Bypass Fully Automatic Video in Motion Pioneer Custom for AVH-P8400BH Better then PAC TR7UPDATE:I've messed with a couple other neat things of the head unit. None of them effect the score at all, but I just wanted to let readers know of other functions.- First things first, Netflix WORKS in AppRadio mode! Just by starting Netflix on my phone and swapping to Advanced App Mode it picked up the video right away. It even pulled Youtube videos the same way. Nice! While the Google Maps app in App mode works fine, it doesn't do turn by turn. It also doesn't allow you to use compass view mode, which gets a little confusing when you forget which way you are facing but other than that it functions like a champ. MotionX GPS does turn by turn and even voicing directions. Totally worth the $1 buck ! The only issue with the app is that you have to use the phone to edit your destination, which makes since, however it displays the full HUD nicely on the head unit. The only annoyance I've found is that to change tracks, you're forced to go back to the MediaApp or switch back to normal mode.- I made a comment about the audio snapping out because of the BT audio taking over and turning off the BT audio to solve the problem, but I found that if you just let the deck connect to the phone before plugging it in solves this problem. BT connects pretty quickly, so I just have to make sure I plug in my phone after turning on my car.- When using Pandora, you DO NOT have the use the Pandora App provided if you don't want to. It displays all info fine in the iPod source controls just fine and will allow you to control everything through it's interface, however you won't be able to thumbs up, thumbs down, or read the artist information through the head unit. Something else I noticed that if you are using iPod source, you can just press the Artist, album, or even song title and it will direct you to that information. Sweet!

    4Good, for now

This review is for the new AVH-8400BH. It just came out in march. You also will want the CDIU201S Advanced App Mode USB Interface Cable. Also note: you need a new special parking break bypass, the old ones will not work, and i did not know that so i'm waiting for the one that will work with this.______________________________SO I purchased the 4400, but canceled it when i learned that the 8400 was coming out in march, which is the same but with double the resolution, and advanced app mode. worth the 200 bucks more to me at the time. This thing Looks SHARP... really really eye catching, great display. I installed this thing last night, and only partially (didnt finish installing rear view camera, and parking break bypass), so I will give an updated review later.Boot - boots up really fast, no issues there unlike the GPS models.Interface - I actually found it quite responsive, the swiping gesture to go to the next screen even works well.HD Radio - works great, great images etc.Ipod - haven't used yetPandora - really neat - you can run it over blue tooth, but using the iphone/pod cable gives you control. It can be buggy... would turn off, or go in a loop of trying to launch pandora on your phone.Advanced app mode - didnt get to use, parking break bypass not installedrear view camera - didnt finish install.Bluetooth - calls work great. also audio streams just fine.DVD player - haven't used yet.overall i'm excited for the unit, but i know the advanced app mode is going to disappoint me... and yes its expensive for something cheaper ones do well, but, the resolution is hard to beat.__________________________________________________________::UPDATE::SOoo - the bypass i purchased still hasn't come in yet so I still cant review app radio or dvd player or any video functions besides rear view camera ~ but it i'll give a view more updatesthis unit is really starting to grow on me.instatllation - when used with a harness its really easy and straight forward. everything is clearly marked.sound - my new speakers have been broken in and it sounds great. the EQ really is awesome. I played around with the dual zone and it seems to work but I just have an ocd about setting it to only be driver or something so I turned it off. still waiting for my sub woofer to arrive to complete it but, my mid and high range speakers are on target so i expect it will sound as i wanted.rear view camera - I must have tapped into a wrong wire because I cant get it to turn on automatically, but it does have an option to switch to it manually. also theres a warning that i cant seem to make go away about how the image may be reversed. other than that, the display definitely exceeds the quality of my rear view camera.ipod - this display is really good, control is fast and responsive, and its intuitive to browse through a category from it. there was no "play all" in a category, or I haven't figured out how to yet, so i would have to navigate down to a specific song within the category. i've been experimenting with mixtrack and it seems to be functioning like intended (only used it twice)themes - you can change the buttons to almost any color to match your interior, which was great. still haven't popped in an sd card to use my own images as the background.remote - the remote has to be pointed at it.. just an fyi.I will update as soon as I get the damn bypass working. I really wanna try the jailbroken app radio apps abilities that I have waiting on my phone.__________________________________________________________::UPDATE::The new double pulse bypass came (same connections as the normal one) and it worked. Now I can rate all the functionality of the unit.App radio - .... was a let down. the only really useful thing was being able to control google maps / motionx gps. the other apps that come with it are pointless. however I have a jailbroken iphone so I can use display out and use the head units screen to display my phone, just cant control it from there.Dvd - screen quality is great! plays dvds quickly. this was installed in my frontier though so it sits up high, and theres no way to angle the display to face down at all. only up~the pandora app can be buggy - it works best if you quit out of pandora on your phone before hand, and not have it running in the backround, and then launch it after you start up pandora on the head unit.I did pup it up to 4 stars because the head unit itself it pretty solid. App radio sucks, but thats an app, not this head units fault.would have been 5 stars, but theres little hang ups and bugs here and there, the software on the unit isn't quite polished off yet. but soooo close.the hardware is 5 stars for sure.

3Warning iPhone 5 video out not supported to display
    By Gary D Beck
I like the radio a lot and consider it to be an excellent choice unless you expect to be able to display video out from a iPhone 5. I used the video out feature with the mapping App GPS Drive MotionX on my iPhone 4. It no longer works with the iPhone 5 using the new Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter. Here is Pioneer's link to compatibility, it gives no expectation of future operation. Please visit [...] for more information.Just wanted to give everyone a heads up.
