4Really Alpine? Really?
By Old School Audio Nut
Well first off let me begin by saying that when I decided to upgrade my rapidly aging and outdated Pioneer AVH 4300DVD, an Alpine HU was the farthest thing from my mind. Not to mention the 1,400.00 price tag. However upon reading a few reviews and mulling it over I figured what the heck, you only live once. To start with this HU is a beast, very large display being a full inch bigger than my previous HU,and as we all know, size does matter. Very good DVD picture, sounds better than my old Pioneer, tons of features. However, there are a few places where IMHO Alpine dropped the ball. First off, very little customization of the display itself, you get about 5 colors to choose from and there's no changing the push buttons along the bottom edge of the unit. Not a deal breaker but at this price those kinds of things are kind of expected. No background displays available to snazz up the look you're stuck with a plain background. Again not a deal breaker, but really? Doesn't seem to like my sd card and you find very little even mentioned about it in the manual. Which brings me to my next point they do include a CD which has the full manual on it. Which is nice if you want to know nothing about your new toy before you get home, they do include a very vague and rather useless pair of "manuals" on paper inside the box. But they really shouldn't have wasted the ink or the time. Doesn't seem to support iPhone video, tried Netflix,no joy. Perhaps they will release an update that fixes this issue. Now it may seem like my complaints are petty and these things might not bother some or most of the ppl that are considering this HU,but at least now you know. And by the way all my gripes about this one are things that worked great on my Pioneer. Now for the good stuff and there is a ton of it. Great sound, lightning fast reflexes when it comes to iPod music gets to the next track fast when you switch from source to source there's very little if any lag. Navigation is superb, very fast at calculating routes and the ability to do dual screen is very nice. You can listen to your iPod or watch a DVD on one half of the screen and have your navigation on the opposite half. If you have calculated a route but decided to have the iPod menu on the whole screen when you're coming to a turn or even going over the posted speed limit the nav flashes up and notifys you. Very cool yet unobtrusive way of getting your attention. Tons of x over settings and sound adjustments to choose from. Bluetooth works great for phone calls and streaming. However I have yet for it to pickup pandora over Bluetooth it plays the audio but that's about it. No info or changing stations from the HU it will however skip songs. 4 volt preouts are definitely a welcome feature as well. If you have movies on your iPod it plays them without issue. I haven't figured out the search feature yet,it seems to arrange the songs in an order that makes sense only to it. Hopefully ill get used to it. And no remote. Now not that I'm sitting 50 feet away from it. But again,at this price point, that's just stingy. I'm sure you can by one as an accessory, but we shouldn't have to. All in all a great HU,despite the few quirks and missing features that you'll find on the competitors like,Kenwood,JVC,Pioneer and the like. But I've been in car audio since about 1990 and Alpine never really did go for flash. They were always about substance. Which is probably why, even on their flagship they went with less frills and gave us one helluva fine product. Despite a few oddities. I'd definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for a HU that should be relevant for many years to come. Hope this helps someone.
